Dog Chews and Neurological Conditions in Dogs
The Dutch authorities (NVWA - Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) have recently issued a warning regarding reports of dogs exhibiting acute neurological symptoms. These symptoms include fear, howling, crying, aggression, epileptic seizures, this phenomenon, sometimes referred to as "Werewolf Syndrome," has been reported not only in the Netherlands but also in other European countries such as Germany and Belgium.
There is growing concern that these symptoms could potentially be linked to the consumption of certain chewing bones. The University of Hannover is currently investigating this potential connection. However, as of now, no definitive cause has been identified.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) are aware of these concerns. They are in communication with European authorities, actively monitoring the situation, and conducting further investigations. Should any affected products be found to have been imported into the UK, the appropriate actions will be taken to ensure the safety of pets and consumers.
